Honouring a legacy of learning

He believed education is the ultimate catalyst for change

S · L · E · F

Sola Lawal gave generously to the education of those around him throughout his life. This foundation carries that commitment forward, ensuring that financial hardship never stands between a capable student and a university degree.

A life spent investing in others

Sola Lawal understood, perhaps better than most, what education truly does: it does not merely equip a person with knowledge; it expands their world, opening it to a vast range of possibilities they may never have imagined on their own.

Throughout an often challenging yet full and exciting life, SL gave consistently and quietly to the education of those around him. Friends, family, and community members benefited from his belief that learning should never be left to chance or circumstance.

The Sola Lawal Edufund exists to honour that legacy, institutionalising the generosity he lived and carrying it forward for generations who never met him but will nonetheless be shaped by what he stood for.

"Education expands one's horizon, opening a world of possibilities."

A Nigeria where every student with the drive to learn has the means to do so, where the cost of education is never the reason a potential is left unrealised.

To support Nigerian undergraduate students who face financial hardship, empowering them to complete their degrees, access mentorship, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Three commitments that guide us

01
💡

Empower & Innovate

We back students who are not only seeking degrees but who carry within them the potential to solve problems, build enterprises, and push the boundaries of what is possible in their fields and communities.

02
🌱

Community Development

Education does not end with the individual. Every scholar we support carries the knowledge and opportunity they gain back into their families, streets, and communities, multiplying the impact of each scholarship many times over.

Increase Access

Admission to a great university should be the hardest step, not paying for it. We remove the financial barrier for students who have earned their place at OAU or UNILAG but cannot afford to stay.

Ready to take the
next step?

Whether you are a student at OAU or UNILAG facing hardship, or a professional ready to give back through mentorship, there is a place for you in the SLEF community.

Scholarship eligibility

Academic records tell part of the story; determination tells the rest. We encourage all eligible students, especially those navigating financial barriers to apply and share their goals with us.

  • Admitted to or enrolled at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU, Ile-Ife) or University of Lagos (UNILAG)
  • Nigerian citizenship
  • Two references (academic and/or community)
  • Personal statement explaining your circumstances and ambitions

Incoming Students (Year 1)

Students who have received admission to OAU or UNILAG but face financial barriers to accepting their place and beginning studies are eligible to apply before the start of their first session.

Continuing Undergraduates

Students currently enrolled who, due to financial hardship, are at risk of deferring, suspending, or abandoning their studies before completing their degree may apply during the SLEF annual application cycle.

Leadership Team

The foundation is guided by a small, committed team who share SL's conviction that education changes lives, bringing diverse expertise to making that real.
